United Nations Human Rights Council's (UNHRC) 19th Session will be held in Geneva, from 27th February to 23rd March 2012. Malaysia, as a member of the Human Rights Council will also take part in this session. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Datukseri Anifah Aman will be heading the Malaysian delegation and will be addressing the Council, in High Level Segment on 27th February 2012.
United Nations Human Rights Council
As a nation that committed to The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and as a member country of the United Nations Human Rights Council that respects, Vienna Declaration and Plan of Actions, the Beijing Declaration and Platform of Action, Copenhagen Declaration and Plan of Action & Cairo Declaration and Programme of Action as stated in aide-memoire to the United Nations, Malaysia should support any resolution against the Sri Lanka, for the war crimes and violations of human rights that committed during the brutal war between Government of Sri Lanka and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Tigers (LTTE) in mid 2009.
concentrated ethnic cleansing against Tamils undertaken by Sri Lankan Govt
It is learnt that, the United States will table a resolution in the Council's 19th Session seeking accountability for the deaths of thousands of unarmed civilians during the war and the genuine reconciliation in the Island country. Tens of thousands of unarmed Tamils, including women and children in North-East of the country suffered and died in the last days and weeks of the brutal combat between Government troops and the rebel group. And this has been confirmed by the panel appointed by the UN Secretary General, Mr Ban Ki Moon. The UN Panel, in the report has stated that, there were credible allegations that both sides has committed the war crimes. The report further added, thousands of civilians lost their lives, apparently because of Sri Lankan troops attacks in the no fire zone. Sri Lankan Air Forces too, launched air strikes even on the Hospitals, even though aware of it, as the coordinates of these civilian targets would have been handed to the army command centre by Red Cross. Those actions of Sri Lankan forces should be considered, not only as crimes against humanity, but also as a concentrated efforts of ethnic cleansing against the minority Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Thousands of Tamils are still in these barbed wire camps addressed as refugees camps too
Though the war ended, roughly about 3 years ago, the minority Tamil community in the north-eastern part of the Island state, who were displaced by the war, are still suffering. Many of them, yet to be relocated to their original place and still staying in the refugee camps which lacks all forms basic necessities. It is sad, these people who deserve to live a peaceful lives, living as refugees in barbed wired camps in their own country. Sri Lankan Government is totally does not care about Tamils and the reconciliation process are very slow. Slow efforts in relocating Tamils are proving the Sri Lanka Govt's insincerity in resolving the Tamils woes in the country, post LTTE.
Malaysia, always took a strong stand against any forms of violations of Human Rights, since the days of Tunku as the Prime Minister of the Nation. During Tunku's time, Malaysia boycotted the South African regime, for the apartheid systems adopted by the country. Malaysia, till now doesn't have any diplomatic relationship with the Zionist Israel, because of our stand to support Independent Palestinian state. But, in the matter of Sri Lanka, Malaysia turns its eyes blind. Malaysia's double standard in International human rights issues are very regrettable.
Malaysian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister supporting Racist Sri Lanka
Singhala Regime in Malaysian Parliament
During the Special Parliament Session in January 2009 (far before the Sri Lankan civil war reach the bitter end) to condemn the Israel's attacks on Gaza, Batu Kawan MP, Prof Dr. P. Ramasamy has raised concern over situations in Sri Lanka and demanded for a similar Special Session to discuss the issue. Then Foreign Affairs Minister, Datuk Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim has promised then to look into the matter. After that, there were no news about it. After the bitter end to the civil war, in December 2009, in answering a question from Dr. Ramasamy, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister A. Kohilan Pillay had refused to condemn the Sri Lankan Govt's atrocities against Tamils but praised the Island State which has killed her own citizens. And the Deputy Minister too has said in Parliament, that Sri Lankan Govt promised to the UN Sec-Gen that it will relocate all the Tamil Civilians affected by the war to their native places, before January 2010. Clearly Sri Lanka has failed to do that. Yet, Malaysian Govt stand on the issue is same. This is clearly an hypocritical stand by the BN regime that supports the racist regime of Sri Lanka under the living Hitler, Mahinda Rajapakshe.
Malaysia taking an hypocritical stand, when it comes to human rights issue, though promised to respect the International Human Rights declarations. In September 2011, in UNHRC's 18th Session, Canada has drafted a resolution to condemn the Sri Lanka and to ask Sri Lanka to be more prudent in handling the Human Rights issue. But, Pakistan through the Presidential statement had amended the drafted resolution, to praise the Sri Lankan Govt, even though aware of the regime's failures to address the basic human rights issues, and sadly, Malaysia - the so called "defender of human rights" in world arena has co sponsored the deferral of the drafted resolution. This has proven to be height of Hypocrisy of Malaysian Government in international human rights issues.
Does Malaysia collaborates with living Hitler Mahinda Rajapakshe?!
However, Malaysia have a second chance to correct the mistake. In the upcoming 19th session of the Council meeting starting today, Malaysia should support any resolution brought against the Sri Lankan Govt to pressure the Sri Lankan Govt to be accountable for the large scale of casualties and crimes against the humanity during the war. This would directly pressure the Sri Lankan Govt to undertake a serious and genuine approach in reconciliation process in the Island. That would also pave a way for the amicable political solution to the half century long ethnic conflict in the Island country. Malaysia should also consider the feelings of her citizens of Tamil origin, who are watching Malaysian Govt's next move in this matter.
Malaysian Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak should inform his Foreign Affairs Minister, NOT to vote against the resolution. The same message should be also relayed to the Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations, so that any mistake does not occur during the voting of the resolution, which is to be expected to be tabled by United States in this session. Malaysia should also consider to sponsor or co-sponsor the resolution together with United States, as it involves the greater interest of humanity at large.
